BASH Educational Conference on Headache, Cardiff, 18th October 2024.

Our recent BASH Study day was held in Cardiff. Dr Chirag Mehta attended and reviews his experience.

This was my first educational conference on headache as a member of BASH and as a GP and newly appointed Headache specialist working at the National Migraine Centre, I was looking forward to this and it did not disappoint.

A multi-disciplinary audience

It was a very useful and educational day with many experts in the headache field present from GPs, neurologists and other health professionals involved with headache problems.

Practical learning points are always so useful

A wide range of topics were covered including Post Traumatic Headache, SIH and headache in pregnancy. There were so many useful learning points such as Trigeminal Neuralgia can be a presenting feature of MS and so we should do a MRI scan every 5 years to check for MS, and there is a GCA probability score we should use in assessment.

Tips for GPs at the front-line

I especially enjoyed the session by Dr David Kernick on 'How to survive the ten minute headache consultation' and the session by Dr Katy Munro on 'Empowering Patients and Signposting to Resources'. The update on Anti-CGRPs was very good and will definitely be utilised in my role for the National Migraine Centre. As a novice in the headache specialist field, this has helped my understanding and given me greater confidence in future management/prescribing for patients.

Future treatment options for headache are coming

It was also great to learn of the new potential treatments for migraine that are being studied, for example PACAP. The future for migraine patients looks bright and I am lucky to be able to be part of this in my role with the National Migraine Centre.

The best part of the day was being able to meet colleagues and in particular Dr Munro and my fellow newly-appointed colleague, Dr Temitope Adeniji from the National Migraine Centre.

In conclusion, the BASH educational conference on headache was well worth it and I will be attending more in future.
