Honorary Advisor to the British Association for the Study of Headache (BASH) Council (Non-Voting Member)

The Honorary Advisor to the BASH Council is a non-voting member co-opted by BASH Council to provide expert advice and guidance to Council on matters related to headache disorders, research, and treatment. This role serves as a valuable resource for the Council, offering insights and perspectives that contribute to the organisation's strategic decision-making and goal-setting processes. The full job description can be found here.

What do Honorary Advisors do?

You must be a member of BASH to be an Honorary advisor.

In your role as Honorary Advisor, you will

  • attend BASH Council meetings and participate in discussions, providing advice and insights on relevant topics related to headache disorders, research, and treatment.
  • offer guidance and recommendations to the Council on developing strategies, policies, and initiatives that align with the organisation's mission and objectives.
  • share expertise and knowledge from relevant fields or areas of interest that can benefit BASH's work and decision-making processes.
  • provide feedback and input on proposed plans, programs, or activities undertaken by BASH.
  • contribute to the evaluation and analysis of emerging trends, challenges, or opportunities related to headache research, treatment, and advocacy.
  • foster collaborations and relationships with relevant stakeholders or organisations that can support BASH's goals and initiatives.
  • send a summary to the AGM each year of your contribution to BASH
  • contribute to the BASH blogs

As an Honorary Advisor on BASH council, we ask every council member to reflect annually on their contributions to the missions of BASH (for example they may have attended and contributed to Council meetings, been Social media group member and been posting relevant social media information about BASH. They might have been a lecturer at the ABN or other BASH meeting or have written a BASH website blog piece, or other contributions whether local, national, or otherwise). Each Honorary Advisor is asked to send a short list of their contributions to BASH prior to the AGM.

Blogs are a way of informing BASH members

All council members, at least once per year, are asked to submit a blog on a headache topic of their choice, an item of interest or meeting attended or a short review of an interesting or ‘pivotal’paper. The piece should outline a summary of the paper and the learning points that might contribute to better clinical practice. It could be a piece about a book review or a useful insight gained from another clinical discipline. Blog pieces will be uploaded onto the website. (We recognise these pieces are personal opinions).

For examples, please check the blog pieces currently on the BASH website News page. https://bash.org.uk/news-blog/

What skills would you need?

You need to have demonstrated expertise or a significant interest in areas related to headache disorders, such as research, treatment, advocacy, or patient support.

It's helpful if you have relevant professional experience or background that aligns with BASH's mission and objectives.

We'd love it if you have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide insightful and constructive advice.

It's important that you have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively convey ideas and insights to the Council.

A knowledge of the healthcare landscape, regulations, and best practices related to headache disorders is preferred but not required.

We value objectivity and the ability to offer impartial and unbiased guidance.

Where do meetings occur?

The Honorary Advisor role involves attending BASH Council meetings, which may be held in person, in a hybrid format, or virtually through remote connections. We may meet up at BASH or other conferences in the UK. (Tickets for the Cardiff BASH meeting available here). The AGM will be at the Migraine Trust Annual Symposium and on Zoom this year. It's always good to meet face-to-face but you will usually have the opportunity to attend virtually.

What is the duration of the role? Where are the meetings?

This is a non-voting advisory role within the BASH Council. Information about the Voting Officers is found here. New Honorary Advisors are typically co-opted onto the Council at the Annual General Meeting and serve for an initial term of two years, with the possibility of extension at the discretion of the Council. The individual may be a healthcare professional, clinician, non-clinical academic or a layperson with relevant expertise or interest in headache-related matters. Employees of Pharmaceutical companies are not eligible to sit on BASH Council.

You can fill in the application form here with a proposer, seconder (BASH Members, please) and paragraph about yourself and EMAIL it to us at info@bash.org.uk.
